BURSON, CA – August 11, 2013 - In June 1887, famed English naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace hiked through the Big Trees of Calaveras County, California. On Saturday, October 19th, 2013, as part of Wallace100, the worldwide centenary commemoration of Wallace’s death, a Calaveras County historical society will sponsor a hike through that same grove of giant sequoias, the world’s largest trees, now preserved within Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Approximately five miles in length and four hours in duration, the hike through the majestic South Grove will be guided by an experienced docent and include a presentation by historian Sal Manna about Wallace’s time in Calaveras and San Joaquin counties. Sponsored by the nonprofit Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History (SPWCH), the event is currently the only one in California during the yearlong commemoration emanating from the Natural History Museum in London. Registration ($20 per person) will be limited and participants will be responsible for park entry fees. For more information, please contact the SPWCH at [email protected] or (209) 772-0336.
