BURSON, CA – May 24, 2011 – The 12 most significant pre-1900 structures or ruins in West Calaveras, in order of historic importance, have been announced by the Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History (SPWCH). Dubbed the “Historic Dozen” by the nonprofit organization, the ranking marks a major step in preservation efforts.
The “Historic Dozen” are:
1) Valley Springs Train Depot (Valley Springs)
2) Late House (Valley Springs)
3) Wildermuth House (Campo Seco)
4) Catts Camp Ruins (Wallace)
5) Casa Blanca (Paloma)
6) Gwin Mine Ruins (Paloma)
7) Wheat House (Double Springs)
8) Adams & Co. Ruins (Campo Seco)
9) DeMartini House (Valley Springs)
10) Calaveras Lunch Ranch House (Valley Springs)
11) Cutler-Dennis House (Jenny Lind)
12) Masonic Hall (Milton)
“When presented by an authoritative local history group, this sort of ranking can be valuable for government agencies, historians and others,” said SPWCH President Sal Manna. He added that a “Next Historic Dozen” will arrive in 2012.
Also revealed by SPWCH boardmember Phil Weaver were the winners of the Historic Dozen Contest, the first online-only Calaveras history contest ever presented. “We thank everyone who donated prizes,” said Weaver. “The contest not only brought attention to local businesses but to spwch.thesitemechanics.com and our Facebook page.”
