BURSON, CA – September 4, 2018 – More than 220 livestock brands are explored for the first time in a fascinating new history book, Brands of Calaveras County, California 1881-1913. Far more than a mere compilation, the 382-page book chronicles the families behind the brands--their heritage and emigration, births and deaths, marriages and children, success and failure--and boasts more than 125 vintage photographs.
Brands of Calaveras County, California 1881-1913 features a who’s who of local history, including pioneer cattlewoman Mrs. Ethel Adams, philanthropist Desire Fricot, and cattleman Mills Mitchell. Other well-known families represented, some of whom are still in Calaveras, are Airola, Dell’Orto, Joses, Haupt, Costa, Tryon, Lombardi, Hauselt, Ponte, Huberty, Darby, Zwinge, Cook, Gillam, Fischer, Hatler, Domenghini, Hunt, and Snyder.
Brands of Calaveras County, California 1881-1913 follows last year’s release of the enormously successful Brands of Calaveras County, California 1854-1880. Together, the books span nearly 500 of the earliest brands recorded in one of California’s original counties.
Issued by Calaveras History Publishing, a division of the Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History, Inc., both books were authored by historian Salvatore John Manna and Calaveras County Archivist Shannon Dixon Van Zant. Copies are available for purchase through westcalaverashistory.org and select local and online retailers. For more information, contact the SPWCH at [email protected].
