The Society for the Preservation of West Calaveras History is marking the 151st anniversary of the first shots fired in the Civil War with the official release on Thursday, April 12th, of a roster of all Calaveras County men who served in that conflict. Nearly 750 Union soldiers and sailors and nearly 50 Confederate soldiers are currently listed, along with additional biographical information, at westcalaverashistory.orgs.com (under the Resources subhead). The project, which is the first to ever enumerate those who lived in Calaveras and fought in the Civil War, was launched in 2005 by local historian Sal Manna, who continues to update the roster. Manna, who can be reached at [email protected], is also compiling Calaveras rosters for the Mexican War and the Spanish-American War.
